About Fortuna Admissions

3,855

Fortuna Admissions is a consultation service with a strong team of former MBA admissions staff. Their consultants also include a number of advisors in other fields (student resumes, career services, etc.) to help round out the expertise of its members.

Basics

Fortuna Admissions offers a wide variety of services, starting from early-stage planning to school selection, application strategies, school visits, and all the paperwork needed to be done. Their primary offering is a full school package, but they also offer services for rejected applicants and hourly consulting for those who don’t need quite as much help as the full package provides.

One major difference between Fortuna Admissions and other consulting services is that users can book time with a former Director of Admissions. While this costs more than the standard service, it also provides access to some of the most experienced people in the entire admissions industry. Some students feel the extra help more than justifies the cost.

I had a great experience with Fortuna. My consultant was very hands on and we met frequently to review my essays, resume, and recommendations. I received a full-tuition scholarship from a top institution and would recommend this firm to others.

It’s important to have a compelling story as to why you are applying to an MBA program. Once I’m your program, get to know your administrators to learn about leadership opportunities.

They do the job, but the level of personalization really depends on your consultant. I got into the schools I wanted, and I got decent scholarships from them too. However, it was hard to get facetime with one of the consultants that I used.

However, I do think that they did really help me get into the schools.

I felt Fortuna was not as invested in my success as I would have liked. I used their comprehensive application service for 4 schools and I felt the support I received was just to tick a checkbox off the services they provide and not actually invested in how I can make my application stronger. For example, I was not even asked what the outcome of the decisions were when they knew the date decisions were coming out. I did not feel they were proactive in reaching out and checking on status updates of responses I may or may not have gotten. And when I did not get a favorable response, I did not get a satisfactory answer or support on what I could have done better. I did not feel there was a personal touch especially considering how much I paid and how many schools I applied to. I felt I would have a coach who was bought in to my success but I felt it was just a means to make money for them.

Team was very friendly and supportive. I felt they were very professional and I had a good experience overall.
In the end, it didn’t give my acceptance rate a big boost. But, in all honesty, I am not sure if that is their fault. The whole MBA application process is so intransparent, it’s really hard to tell anything.
In sum, as far as MBA Admission Consultants go I think they are a good choice. However, I don’t think that every person needs or benefits from a consultant.

I used Fortuna for my interview part of my application process at HBS. I’m a second year student now and I always reflect on the valuable benefit that coaching session provided in helping me prepare for the interview.

    :

Fortuna Admissions offered me a relatively affordable and customised essay review package. This was very helpful in my MBA application journey. My consultant also continued to follow up during my interview process. I enjoyed the service more because I had done some pre-reflection before our calls which allowed me save more time too. I really enjoyed the service and got value for money.

I can highly recommend Fortuna to all prospective MBA students who aim to apply for a M7 school. Here is why: 1) Resources: Fortuna has tremendous and insightful resources that will help you understand what your target school is looking for and how you can use your experience and strengths to craft a successful application strategy. 2) Coaches: My Coach – Tatiana Nemo – was wonderful at coaching me through the admission process. She helped me identify what’s unique about my profile compared to all the other applicants and ensured that I am focusing my time on the most important aspects of the application. She was extremely inspiring, patient, thoughtful, and compassionate. Most importantly, I felt as if she deeply cared about the success of my application instead of just doing what’s necessary. Overall, I could not have wished for a better person to motivate me during my application process.

Your MBA Application & School Advice:
Start early and aim to talk to current students + faculty members of your target schools to understand what they are looking for. Work with an admission coaching agency if you feel you don't have sufficient understanding of the application process (e.g. if you're an international student and barely know past applicants)

If you are on the fence about using a consultant, Michel was worth the cost and incredibly beneficial throughout the process. The entire Fortuna experience was great and helped take my application from good to great. When considering a consultant, I was looking for someone who had admissions experience and would be able to candidly evaluate my application. Michel provided a unique perspective when reviewing my essays and overall application. Michel was genuine, responsive and encouraging during the crazy application season. She was a great resource from idea generation to making a final decision. I can’t thank her enough for helping me get into my dream school!

I had a great experience with Fortuna – I got in to my top choice program and received an almost full fellowship at another M7 school. In my experience, Fortuna’s greatest strength is that they have consultants who have worked for the admissions teams of many of the top schools. As a result, there was always someone available to answer my school-specific questions in a very insightful way. Everyone I interacted with at Fortuna was professional, helpful, and reliable.

I worked with Heidi, and she was amazing! She did a great job perfecting my “story”, coaching my recommenders, and helping me understand and articulate my goals. Heidi seemed to know more about my story than I did and she had great ideas and edits for all my essays. She’s very good at constructive criticism – we rewrote my HBS essay probably 50 times. She was easy to communicate with (despite being in different, and constantly changing, time zones) – she always responded within a day and scheduled meetings whenever I asked. My applications were a million times better than they would have been without Fortuna, and I’m so happy that I chose this firm.

I would encourage applicants to utilize at least the 30 minute free consultation with Fortuna Admissions. I used this after I had taken the GMAT and before I started really starting MBA applications. This was helpful in the sense that I already knew my GMAT score and what schools that would qualify me for, so the consultation was more pointed. My consultation was with Matt Symonds and overall I would say the 30 minutes were a great starting point as I focused on the application process. Matt was great at summarizing how each school is different (or likes to think they are different), and how to approach each school’s application with that in mind. Unfortunately I was in a bit of a time crunch with the application deadlines, so I did not further utilize Fortuna’s paid services. However, if I had had more time I think I would have liked to do at least an additional 2-3 hours of review with Fortuna before hitting the submit button, because I think it’s always a good idea to have a professional review if possible. In the end, I was accepted into my top school, but I think having further consultations would have helped with my confidence level throughout the application process, which would probably have been worth the money.

Your MBA Application & School Advice:
Get started thinking about your story as soon as you have the slightest instinct to apply to business school! The most critical questions to have a great answer to are "why MBA" and "why now", and these are not as easy you might think. I found it necessary to talk through it with my closest friends and family. However, it's easy to fall into the trap of soliciting too many opinions. The people who were the most helpful to my apps in the end were the ones who knew me very, very well even though they had not been through the MBA application process themselves.

Caroline from fortuna was extremely helpful with a total overview of what I have to offer for a business school. She told me what to highlight and things that I will need to bolster going into the application process. To be more specific, she also recommended a group of schools to look at as she knows where you can be competitive. she brings a vast amount of knowledge to the table and is definitely a must use resource in this process. I Highly recommend speaking with fortuna.

I chose FA because of their team experience – consultants previously worked at INSEAD Admissions team and have a first hand experienced in selecting candidates. Knowing that INSEAD doesn’t support reapplications, I though I needed to maximize my chances.

We started off by making a deep dive into my experience (through a 2-to-1 Skype interview) and preselected “stories”. Going forward I worked with a very skilled, structured and disciplined consultant who helped me to fully prepare my application in about 5 weeks.

Her feedback was insightful and she clearly knew what the school expected.
I also had access to the former Director of Admissions who reviewed my application and gave a number of valid comments. Her involvement was minimal though (not that it was needed, but somehow I had expected a bit more).

What I also missed is a bit of a personal touch and support. 80% of communication is by email and comments are given directly in the essays (in track changes mode). Calls were limited which sometimes left room for misinterpretations and unanswered questions. I feel that I could have made my pick even better if we had 2-3 more calls.

The interview preparation was just right – I got a list of questions and we had a nice long and thorough mock up interview. That helped me a lot, and I got some (very much needed) encouragement from my consultant.

Generally the guys know their job well – I got accepted in the last round, which is all that matters at the end of the day.

Quality process, quality service, great consultants, but don't expect babysitting and handholding.
These guys are not therapists. Their job is to make your essays better and they are good at it.
