Broad College of Business
Kara Tripi, Director, MBA Admissions, Broad College of Business 1. What’s the single most exciting development, change, or event happening at your MBA program this coming year? This year, Broad College has made significant strides. We’re excited to welcome our new Dean, David Souder, and Associate Dean of MBA Programs, Ayalla Ruvio. Their expertise will undoubtedly continue to elevate our graduate programs. Additionally, as the world of business changes, we want to offer diversified curriculum for students to expand on their passion and build connections between industry. This semester we launched a new sub-concentration in corporate social responsibility and sustainability. The curriculum focuses on balancing economic, social, and environmental factors for long-term organizational success. As MSU is a pioneer in sustainable practices, this concentration aligns perfectly with our mission and the increasing demand for socially conscious business leaders. 2. What 2-3 qualities, skill sets, experiences do your program value most in applicants? We’re looking for candidates who are not only academically driven but also socially engaged. A Full-Time MBA program offers a unique opportunity to build strong relationships with your classmates through both formal and informal interactions. Student-led resource groups provide a platform for connecting with peers who share similar interests, while organic interactions outside the classroom can lead to lifelong friendships and professional networks. We believe that a strong sense of community is essential for a successful MBA experience. Our team-based coursework encourages collaboration and teamwork, fostering a supportive and collaborative learning environment. 3. How does your team approach the essay portion of the application specifically? The written essay and video essay provide invaluable insights into a candidate’s motivations and critical thinking skills. The written essay allows candidates to articulate their reasons for pursuing an MBA, while the video essay challenges them to think creatively and respond thoughtfully to a prompt. There’s no ‘right’ answer to our essay questions; we’re interested in unique perspectives and authentic responses. 4. Do you have any application tips (for essays & recommendations) for MBA applicants? Are there common mistakes that applicants should try to avoid? I encourage all applicants to conduct thorough research on MSU before submitting their application. While this may seem obvious, many candidates apply without doing their own research or simply because of family influence. It’s crucial to choose a program that aligns with your specific goals and interests, not just its ranking. A common mistake is rushing the application process, leading to errors like mentioning the wrong university in essays or relying on family members for recommendations. We offer multiple deadlines to allow ample time for preparation and submission of a strong application. 5. How important is standardized testing for an MBA application to Broad, and is there a preference for GMAT, GRE, EA for your full-time program? We evaluate applicants holistically, considering factors beyond standardized test scores. While we accept GMAT, GRE, and Executive Assessment, we also offer test waivers for eligible candidates. Scholarships and fellowships are awarded based on merit, and a strong test score can enhance a candidate’s financial offer from the program. 6. What resources are available at your MBA program to assist with internship and full-time job opportunities)? Broad College’s Russell Palmer Career Management Center provides exceptional support to our MBA students. Before the program even starts, each student is paired with a dedicated career advisor and a peer coach. This early support helps students adjust to the demands of the program and prepare for internship interviews. The Palmer Center offers a wide range of resources, including career goal setting, employer connections, mock interviews, resume and cover letter reviews, professional clothing rental, and an interview suite. All Full-Time MBA students also take a for credit career management course. 7. What is the one aspect of your program that you wish applicants knew more about? Our admissions process is focused on selecting students who will contribute to a vibrant and inclusive classroom community. We believe that a smaller class size allows for deeper connections and more personalized learning experiences. By prioritizing quality over quantity, we ensure that every student feels valued and has the opportunity to thrive. As a tight-knit MBA program, we’re committed to providing a comprehensive and intentional experience. From optional social events with current students to meaningful alumni connections, we strive to create a supportive network that empowers our students to make a lasting impact on the Spartan legacy. 8. What is a recent breakdown of citizenship/ nationality for Broad’s student class? FERPA protects nationally of candidates so I cannot provide a numbered breakdown, but I can tell you 9. Fun Fact about Broad– such as where is a favorite hangout for your MBA students? As one of the largest college campuses in the U.S., MSU offers a wide range of exciting activities for our MBA students. From the MSU Dairy Store, where we make our own ice cream with on-campus cows, to the Abrams planetarium, Broad Art Museum, and various athletic facilities, there’s always something to do or a place to hangout!
